Sunny Day: Annabelle’s Sesame Street Themed 2nd Birthday Party (Part I)

Annabelle is officially two years old.  And even though she is (and always will be) my baby, there really is very little baby left…just a few sweet rolls of baby fat clinging to her kissable belly and knees.  She is now a big girl, with thoughts of her own.  And opinions.  Many opinions.  And ideas.  She has her own, amazing, personality.  A sweet mixture of her daddy and me, fused together with her own unmistakable Annabelle-ness.  She is kind and cuddly.  She is funny.  She is sweet and polite.  She had a remarkable memory and vocabulary for someone so small.  She is klutzy and tough.  She is mine.  My precious little (baby) girl.

Two years have gone by in what seems like a heartbeat, and yet it is hard to really remember a time when she wasn’t our everything.  There is a wedding picture of Mike and I hanging in our den, and I occasionally find myself looking at it and thinking, I wonder who was holding Annabelle when this picture was taken?  And then I remember.  Annabelle didn’t exist yet.  She was just a hope.  A wish.  A giddy whisper between two people in love about the family we hoped to someday have…

And now two full amazing, giggle-infused, sleep-deprived, cuddle-and-kiss-filled years have passed.

And so, there was a PARTY.  A Sesame Street themed party, for a girl who adores all things Elmo and Abby and Grouchy (as she calls Oscar).  Who loves imitating Cookie Monster singing “C Is For Cookie” at the top of her lungs and laughing at Super Grover as he falls from the sky.  Who now, incredibly, tells me the “Word Of The Day” and its meaning.

I shared a little run down of her Garden Party Themed 1st Birthday Party a few weeks ago.  Now, here are a few highlights of her 2nd Big Day.

The Decorations:  Since Sesame Street is so bright and fun with monsters of every shade, I decided the color scheme would be a rainbow.

Like last year, I made a sign out front directing guests to the party…

Of course she needed a letter of the day…

And a number of the day sign…

And a 123 Annabelle Street Sign…

With the help of my mom, I made a loooong paper chain to string across our deck.  Centerpieces were made out of rainbow rice that I dyed with Annabelle.  (If you want to read more about how we made them, you can check out this post.)

I used those centerpieces on three of the four tables.  On the fourth table, I used decorative rock-filled candle holders to spell out her name.

Like last year, I did a little collage of her monthly photos.  The First Year…

And The Second Year…

A “Word On The Street” Sign…

She has a ton of Sesame Street stuffed animals, which I tied around the deck…

A little sunblock and bug spray basket…

Trash and recycling signs that I hung near the trashcans…

A Happy Birthday Annabelle sign…

Games For The Kiddies:  A cute game that I had seen all over Pinterest was Oscar’s Trash Toss.  (The tiny trashcan is from Ikea!)

Here’s Annabelle playing the game…

And pausing for a moment to pose…

For some water fun, we set up Annabelle’s water table and kiddie pool (renamed Ernie’s Rubber Duckie Pool for the day)…

Although I think the duckies looked a little sad…

Annabelle getting in on the water fun…

Favors:  From the $1 section in Target, I got green buckets for the boys and little straw bags for the girls.  I filled each with Sesame Street themed goodies, including (of course) a box of goldfish.  For labels, I printed out clipart images of different characters, onto which I wrote each child’s name.

Crafts for The Kiddies:  At Michael’s I bought a wooden letter for each child.  On the craft table was a little sign that read, “The letter of the day is A for Annabelle.  Find the first letter of your name and decorate it.”  I put out watercolors, markers and stickers for them to use.  I also printed out some Sesame Street coloring book pages that I found on the Sesame Street website.

This is what the craft table looked like before all our little guests arrived…

And this is what it looked like after they got their craft on…

Mess= FUN!

It was a perfect day and Annabelle had an absolute blast.  She really understood this year, that this party was for her…and she enjoyed every minute of it!  (Proof of how much she enjoyed it, is that the next day she took a FOUR HOUR nap!  Mommy and Daddy may have joined in the napping…)

I’ll be back on Friday with Part II of her little celebration…including all the details on the food!
